The Registered Nurse will provide health services to children at the Sheltering Arms Reception Center, which is a Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services program located in the Baychester area of the Bronx. The Sheltering Arms Reception Center is a pre-placement residential setting for children 0 through 12 years of age who are awaiting identification of an appropriate foster care placement. The design and intent of the Reception Center is to offer infants and children 0 through 12 years of age a home-like and welcoming environment, which would be comforting during a very difficult time. The Reception Center has a capacity for 15 children and a nurse is on site twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. This job entails three 12-hour shifts a week, including the option for overtime. Scheduling has flexibility, working in conjunction with the other nurses on staff. This role is under the supervision of the Sheltering Arms Medical Director and Director of Health Services.
* Provide health services to children at the Sheltering Arms Reception Center * Triage patients as they arrive from the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) and prior to discharge * Daily assessments of patients, medication administration as needed * Monitor general aspects of patient health while children are at the Reception Center, including diet, physical activity, developmental or behavioral concerns * Regular communication and coordination with parents, child care workers, administrative and medical staff regarding findings, treatments and follow up needed * Request and follow up referrals to other health care services or specialists as needed * Instruct families and staff on topics such as health education, child safety and disease prevention * Contribute to the development of health improvement programs * Attend conferences, seminars and agency meetings as designated by the Director of Health Services * Other duties that may be assigned
* Current and valid New York State Registered Nurse license * Bachelor's Degree required * Two or more years of experience working in pediatrics * Experience working with foster care youth a plus * Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Spanish-speaking a plus * Ability to coordinate all areas of health care services, to educate, instruct and counsel; and to communicate effectively with agency staff, foster and biological parents * The ability to exercise good judgment in emergency situations, to take initiative appropriately and to function independently when required. Insight to know when and where to get help * Current First Aid, CPR, and Infection Control certification required and maintained throughout employment * Valid NYS Driver's License Required
